The Challenge

The harbor faced significant operational challenges due to an outdated system that was ill-suited for its unique, asymmetrical layout. Inefficiencies arose from irregular boat placement, causing major delays for the harbor manager and truck drivers during critical seasonal periods—specifically, storing boats for winter and launching them in the spring. The manual process of physically verifying boat locations was time-consuming, leading to logistical issues and planning difficulties each season. Moreover, the uncertainty of which boats blocked others added to the complexity, making it challenging to optimize boat movements and manage space effectively.

The Solution

To resolve these challenges, we developed a tailor-made, coordinate-based system that featured an interactive map. This custom solution was designed in close collaboration with the harbor staff, including truck drivers and the harbor manager, ensuring that the system addressed their specific operational pain points. By integrating their feedback, we created a user-friendly interface that streamlined the entire process, from locating boats to planning movements, ultimately enhancing the overall efficiency.

Results

The new system transformed harbor operations, drastically reducing the time spent on locating boats and improving planning for seasonal storage and launching. The harbor manager now has instant access to precise boat locations, simplifying the entire process and offering greater flexibility to boat owners regarding storage schedules. This solution has not only boosted the satisfaction of harbor staff but also improved the overall experience for boat owners. Inspired by this success, we are now developing a generalized version of the system to assist other harbors facing similar challenges and improve their operational efficiencies.
